CABLING & BRACING
Installing hardware and software in a tree does not keep it from failing. It does however often significantly reduce chances of failure when installed properly in conjunction with a good care plan. The picture to the right shows a 5 point radial COBRA (non invasive) cable system installed on an old sugar maple with no center stem. Note how all stems now point outward with very little live wood in the center to hold them from falling outward. This is poor structure and can be avoided when a tree is pruned with foresight while young. At this point, the cable is the last mitigating factor other than removal. We care for a few trees like this that have been held together for many years and weathered some significant storms.
